Who can ignore the gun violence and rampant illicit drug use in our communities?

A group of professional athletes are helping to address these issues and are planning a celebrity basketball game that they hope will help unite our cities.

The event is called Shooting4Peace. The aim is to diminish violence in our communities by reaching out to school children and the entire community with a message of peace carried by professional athletes who are successful people and sound role models. The game is played between former NBA players and local basketball talent.

Similar to a highly successful event in Baltimore, MD in April of last year, Shooting4Peace involves school assemblies where the athletes talk about how they became successful in life followed a few days later by a basketball game wherein former NBA stars compete against a local team.

“We want to be a beacon of hope.  We want to be a catalyst to shine a light on Harrisburg”, said Ray Sydnor, one of the organizers of the event.  “The message is a message of hope”.  Sydnor said.  “We want to talk about anti-violence, anti-drugs, anti-bullying and unity….our goal is to put the neighbor back in the hood”.

The event is being organized by CBMC, a group of Christian Business men in York and Harrisburg in collaboration with local churches and community organizations.
